Griffith's
Experiment( 1928)
Note: For the convenience of students we have compiled the
experiment in to a flow chart, how ever it is advised to refer
textbooks for details.
Found different types of pneumo coccal strains
which can cause pneumonia, in infected mice

(1) Infected type 1 encapsulated pneumococci in
some mice

Result ===> All mice died due to Pneumonia
(2) Infected type 2 capsule less pneumococci
(forming rough colonies) in some mice

Result ====> All mice survived
(3) Injected heat killed type 1 pneumo cocci with
smooth colonies in some mice

result ====> All mice survived
(4) Injected heat killed type 1 pneumo cocci with
live type 2 capsule less pneumo cocci in same mice

Mice dies due to pneumonia

(5) Bacterial cells isolated from dead mice

Found type 2, 1 & 3 encapsulated pneumococci
forming smoth colonies

Conclusion: Dead type 1 cells provided something
to live, non capsulated type 2 cells that transformed them into an
encapsulated type 1, 2 & 3 forms.
