ANTIBIOTIC
- Term antibiotic
was defined by SELMAN WAKSMAN
- He defined it as
- an organic
compound
- produced by one
micro organism
- that at great
dilutions inhibits the growth of or kills another Micro
organism/ micro organisms
- It does not
include
- Materials of
plant origin
- materials of
non-microbial source
- organic acids or
amines that inhibits microbial growth
- which are
inactive at higher dilutions
- For any
antibiotic, there is a specific group of microorganisms
comprising its " inhibition spectrum"
- Antibiotics are
produced primarily by Bacteria- streptomyces, Nocardia & fungi.
- Generally the
metabolic reactions of a microorganism do not produce antibiotic
however antibiotic Biosynthesis may be regarded as a " series of
inborn errors of metabolism" superimposed on the normal
metabolism of the organism
- Industrial
antibiotic fermentation processes involve subjecting
microorganisms to mutagenic agents, to highly nutritious media &
growth conditions
