ANTIBIOTIC FERMENTATIONS

ANTIBIOTIC

  • Term antibiotic was defined by SELMAN WAKSMAN
  • He defined it as
    • an organic compound
    • produced by one micro organism
    • that at great dilutions inhibits the growth of or kills another Micro organism/ micro organisms
  • It does not include
    • Materials of plant origin
    • materials of non-microbial source
    • organic acids or amines that inhibits microbial growth
    • which are inactive at higher dilutions
  • For any antibiotic, there is a specific group of microorganisms comprising its " inhibition spectrum"
  • Antibiotics are produced primarily by Bacteria- streptomyces, Nocardia & fungi.
  • Generally the metabolic reactions of a microorganism do not produce antibiotic however antibiotic Biosynthesis may be regarded as a " series of inborn errors of metabolism" superimposed on the normal metabolism of the organism
  • Industrial antibiotic fermentation processes involve subjecting microorganisms to mutagenic agents, to highly nutritious media & growth conditions
